Summer Reading

Over the summer, you were asked to read at least two novels of your choice. 1) Briefly tell me what you read, including the titles and authors. 2) I want to know what you liked about the books, what you learned and, more importantly, what matters to you about the book's content.

*Make sure to adhere to proper conventions and proofread your response. If, for some reason, you did not read two novels, tell me about two novels you have read and answer the above

  1. Over this summer I read Keeping The Moon by Sarah Dessen, and Kissing Annabel: Love, Ghosts, and Facial Hair; A Place Like This by Steven Herrick. In Keeping The Moon I liked the characters a lot. I learned not to wear a lip ring because everyone thinks it is discussing. I think it’s important to not think what people think of you and Sarah talks about this threw the whole book. The second book Kissing Annabel: Love, Ghosts, and Facial Hair; A Place Like This was an amazing book. It brought up a lot of female issues that young teen women would come across. The book taught me not to believe what anyone says or thinks. It taught me not to get into a relationship and throw your whole life away just because of your ‘teenage feelings for your partner’. I think everything that Steven talks about in the book matters only for the fact that it happens everyday.

  2. Over the summer, i read two exciting thrilling books. One of the books is called, "Enders Game," by Orson Scott Card. Now Ender wasn't really his real name, it was more of his nick name that everybody called him. He was third child meaning that the family had one to many children. In this book, most familys' only had two children and to have three was like a, horrible thing. Just the way their sociaty worked. Later on, Ender got as you could say drafted for a special military training force. Only a select few were offered to go. This military force, trained kids to be commanders and stuff like that so leaders for war. Oh, Ender has one evil older brother named Peter and a sister that could not love him anymore possible than she did. Her name was Valentine. Back to getting chosen for the military forces training. They had a space shuttle taking the kids to a zero gravity training center in space. Far away from many things. In this training center, Ender gets stuck in playing this one game that he can never beat, and spends weeks at a time try to beat it. Finally he does. Also, Ender does fairly well in battle. Later, Ender is made Commander of his unit or the Dragon Army and recieves a group of soldiers. Some are bright some are not so bright but none the less. Ender is the commander. When they start battles, Ender's unit doen't work as a team but as individuals which is not good at all. Soon later, Ender is transfered out of battle school and into a new higher rank school. The Commander school. Also, they find out that Valentine talked to Ender on vacation and that was that. Graff takes Ender to Eros, the planet that holds the International Fleet command, there, Ender meets Mazer Rackham. The hero of the second, yes the second bugger invation. Buggers are the enemy at war as all this is going on. Rackham send Ender through a series of battle tests first thing. Then, Ender is commander there and learns that buggers are highly evolved beings or insects. As time goes on the Battles become harder and harder. Later, Ender relized the the battles had been real and has made a great cost in some of his men. Once Ender finds this out he starts to second guess what he has been doing and the teachers all keep saying how much they need him. Time keeps going on and and now in this game, Peter has taken over the world. But in the end, Ender sees that the Buggers not really wanted to fight with the humans. So he dicids to try to find a home for the newly good buggers. I would recamend this book to anybody who likes adventure.
My next book i read was Harry Potter 4. (The Goblet of Fire) by J.K. Rowling. This book is another adventure and mysteric book. in my opinion, one of the best books of harry potter. Now i am sure you have all seen the movie but in reality, the book is way better. So ther is a boy named Harry Potter who is the wizard boy to survive the "Avada-kadabra" curse or the killing curse. But in this book, Harry is chosen to compete in a Try Wizard Cup. But Harry is chosen fourth for some odd reason. When there is always, there is only chosen three. Ohhh mysterious. First task comes to hand and harry fights a brutal dragon and wins with the help of his broom. Second task was withstanding one hour in the lake without coming up for air and looking for a possesion somewhere in the lake. These possesions where human beings, best friends, dates, and sisters. Now Harry didn't win this event but instead of saving one person, he saved two giving him second place. Now the third event was a maze. Not any maze, one full of magic and hedges that move. Harry fights his way through and when he touches the cup, it was a PORT KEY!!! To some off grave yard where the one, the only, Voldemort is reborn or comes back to life by taking some of Harry's blood. Also, Voldemort kills Cedric and Harry is able to get back to the port key and... Well you will just have to find out what happens next

  3. Over the summer I read 3 books which were all in the same series and by the same author. The first book I read was Maximum Ride by James Patterson. The next two book I read in that series were Schools Out Forever and then Saving The World And Other Extreme Sports which is also in the series. What I liked about the books was how the author was capable of grabbing you and keeping you hooked onto the books and how he made it an almost journal kind of thing but it was a first person story. What i learned in the book was that if you want something to change than be apart of the cause and to fight for what is right.

  4. Over this summer, I read the novel Ashes of Roses, for the third time, by Mary Jane Auch. I read this book again, because it is one of my all-time favorite books. I also read My Sister’s Keeper, by Jodi Picoult. Ashes of Roses is about a 16 year old girl named Rose Nolan, who immigrates from Ireland to New York in 1911 for a better life. Rose is excited, because she knows that there is more to life than getting married and having a family at such a young age in Limerick, Ireland. Rose's 12 year old sister, Maureen, her mother, father, and little brother and sister thought it all would work out once they got to America, but her baby brother had a disease in his eyes and was not allowed past the gates. So, Rose’s father takes him back, so it’s just Rose, Maureen, their mother, and baby sister now. They went to see their father’s brother, who married an awful woman with two bratty daughters. To make their own money, Rose works in a paper rose making shop. After a while, her mother can’t take it, so she wants for them to go home. Rose and Maureen refuse her, and their mother resiliently lets them go as long as they stay with their uncle. Rose lied and said they would, but eventually they found a nice girl and her father to rent out a room in their apartment. Gussie, their apartment friend, set up a job for Rose and Maureen. Rose starts getting off track and spending her money with her new friends, abandoning Gussie. The turning point in the book is when there is a fire at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory, where they work. They are all stuck on the 9th floor of the building! Gussie starts helping a woman, and Rose tries getting out to find her sister, on the 7th floor! What happens next? Well, you’ll just have to read the book! My Sister’s Keeper is an excellent book about a thirteen year old girl, Anna, who was genetically, a perfect match for her ill older sister, Kate. Her mother was obsessed with keeping Kate alive, so she would go to extreme measures to get Anna to donate organs for Kate. One day, Anna went to a law office for a lawyer to sew her mother for the rights of her own body. The trial that’s coming up tears a daughter and mother apart, as they are separated by two totally different opinions on their family member’s health. I LOVED both of these books. The idea of being independent, in the book Ashes of Roses, and the idea of standing up for yourself in what you think is right, just like in the book. My Sister’s Keeper inspires me to be myself and reminds me that I am strong and can do anything that I’m willing to fight for. What matters to me about these books is that the two authors cared enough to write down their thoughts, and stand up for people that are afraid to speak for themselves without a little inspiration. These are both excellent books that deserve an endless amount of thanks.

  5. Over the summer I read the two books “At Leningrad’s Gates” by William Lubbeck, and “Wanted!” by Caroline B. Cooney. I personally enjoyed Wanted more that At Leningrad’s Gates because it had more of a thrill to it. But Leningrad’s Gates was inspiring to me because it was about a boy growing up in Germany against the Nazi party, but he ended up being drafted into the war. As the book goes on it tells that he is not fighting for the Hitler like everyone else, but for his family and friends back home which soon are the only things he has left. Wanted is about a young girl who’s parents are divorced, but one day her father is killed and she is blamed by for the murder of her own father. Soon, everyone is after her and she can only trust herself, but only sometimes. What surprised me the most is that she never gave up in what she believed, which is that she didn’t do it. She pressed on and continued to find the truth behind the whole mess. Which is something I think we should all do, stand for what you believe in, no matter what they say. “Can You Practice What You Preach? Or Would You Turn The Other Cheek?” -Where Is The Love? 6. Well this summer I read lots of books and put two down. The last clique book; P.S I Loathe You, By: Lisi Harrison and The Silver Kiss, By: Klause. P.S I Loathe You book is a book about a clique that slowly deteriates. After being on a crazy boy-fast,(in previous books) the clique is ready to strick back. Massie the leader of the clique is after a boy named Demesey but secretly Claire's friend Layne best friend of Demesey isn't about to make that possible. Layne being in a secret committee with one of Massie's friends Kristen, spys on Massie and tries to keep Massie and Demesy turning into something. Kristen has her own problems though because her boyfriend, Dune doesn't get back for awhile and she really misses him, including the fact that Demesy told her he loves her(Kristen). Alicia seconed in command to Massie is pretty much done with being Beta, after Massie made a cheerleading squad without her dancing ablities, Alicia decides to take action and create her own cheerleading team since Massie made a fool out of the team. Dylan having zilch in the guy zone is down traught and also has started a new diet. Claire being totally in love with her old boyfriend Cam, she is all wond up and him and isn't really paying attention to everyone else will that work out in the end? Without any boys was tearing the girls apart but with guys will it be worse?
I really liked the book even though it's not my favorite out of all of the Clique books. I learned that we should not be bothered or get off task with distractions because it ends up killing your friendships with pretty much all your friends.
The second book Breaking Dawn, By: Stephanie Meyer is a book about Bella, a ordinary teenage girl and Edward a vampire, both in love with each other. It starts off with Bella and Edward getting married, and during there honeymoon Bella finds out she's pregant. This is not an ordinary pregancy because it is half-human and half-vampire. Edward seeing it as a little monster thinks they should dispose of it, but Bella wants to save it and calls Rosalie(Edward's sister) who is there to protect her baby. Rosalie doesn't care what happens to Bella as long as she gets the baby, Edward knows this because he reads minds. Edward tries to convince her, including a bribe with having another baby with her best friend Jacob. Jacob is very hurt by the previuos rejection, but he isn't the only one who hears his thoughts but also his wolf pact, of Seth and Leah. he has a heavy burden because he broke off from his old Alpha, Sam and created his own pack, by protecting Bella. Bella has a child named, Renesmee Jacob imprints which means that he is in love with her and can't focas on any other girl but her. Bella is turned into a vampire to save her life. With new strenth, she protects her baby from the Volturi(the royality of vampires and act as rule guarders) because they fret that she is a "immortal child" which are uncontrolable and kill many. The Cullens gather many vampires around to try to explain to the Volturi that Renesmee is not an immortal child, but the Volturi still think she is danger to the human socitey. Alice and Jasper (Vampires, Soulmates, and brother and sister to Edward) previously missing return with Nahuel, a 150-year-old vampire-human crossbreed like Renesmee, who shows he and Rensmee are not a threat and the Volturi leave. I liked the book and I learned that determination was the key in this story.

  7. Over the summer I read a few books but my favorites were Evermore, Blue Moon, Impulse, and Glass. The author of Evermore and Blue Moon is Alyson Noel. The author of Impulse and Glass is Ellen Hopkins. Evermore and Blue Moon are fictional romantic novels. These novels are about a young immortal, Damen, who has lived for almost all of eternity and every time Ever, the main character, reincarnates Damen falls in love with her. When Ever was in a car crash that killed her entire family, Damen saved her and made Ever immortal. Both characters go through many adventures together through these two books, and the third and final book comes out in 2010.
Impulse is about three teenagers who are put in a mental institution. They all meet each other there and go through the “healing process” together. Impulse is a fictional book. Glass is also a fictional book, but it was based off a true story. The main character, Kristina, has a crack addiction. She tries to keep it under control for her baby, but it becomes too much for her.
These novels taught me different things. Impulse and Glass taught me that one bad move can ruin a life. They also taught me to think about my actions and think about the future. Evermore and Blue Moon taught me that love can last an eternity and that it can conquer all. I liked all the books I read this summer, but these novels I liked the best out of all.

  8. Over the summer, I read New Moon by Stephenie Meyer and The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks. New Moon is the second book in the popular series Twilight. I read the first one and loved it so I of course wanted to read the second one. New Moon focuses on the main character Bella and the struggles she faces after the love her life, Edward leaves her. In the first book, Bella meets Edward, falls in love, and discovers his secret of being a vampire. In New Moon, Edward believes he is putting Bella into too much danger so he and his family decide to move in with another vampire family, leaving Bella heart broken and in more danger than Edward had expected. Enemy vampires, Laurent and Victoria are after Bella because Edward and his family killed one of their other vampire friends. Meanwhile, Bella is getting closer with her old friend Jacob when all of sudden he starts ignoring and avoiding her which leads Bella to believe that he is hiding something. In this book, Bella is taken on many adventures including becoming friends with wolves and flying to Italy to find Edward. I loved how much adventure was in this book and how it always kept me wanting to read more. This book really made me use my imagination to picture everything that happened and I love it when authors can do that. The second book I read was The Notebook. This book is a love story that starts out with an older man reading to his wife about their past that they wrote in a notebook. The main character, Noah is a hard working boy who falls for Allie, a girl from a wealthy family. They spend a wonderful summer together and fall in love, but when fall comes, Allie has to move back South, leaving Noah alone. They still love each other but years go by and eventually they both push the other one to the back of their memory. Allie finds someone else and is engaged to him and a few weeks before her wedding, she finds a newspaper article about Noah and all her feelings are brought back. She then takes a trip down to see him for a weekend to tell him everything that has happened and say it is over. But once she sees him and talks more she knows she is still in love and so is Noah. I loved this book because it was beautifully written and is a classic love story. This story went into great detail that I even understood how each character felt. Both books were great and I would recommend them to anyone!

  9. The two books I read are "Star Wars Order 66" by Karen Traviss and "Halo The Fall Of Reach" by Eric Nylund. "Star Wars Order 66 is about a republic commando's life story about how he becomes who he is today. It's tells the story about what he went through and what he's going through. "Halo The Fall Of Reach" is about how the spartans came to be and about how the died and why. It also tells the story about what happened to the planet Reach. I like them both because it really intersting and in depth. They both also have a lot of action.

  10. Over the summer, I read two fantastic books. Twilight by Stephenie Meyer and Vampire Plagues: London 1850 by Sebastian Rooke. Twilight (as most people know) is about a girl named Bella who meets a strange but charming vampire boy. All though things seem awkward between them at first they fall deeply in love with each other. Edward, being a vampire raised in a family that only drinks animals blood, has no intensions of ever hurting Bella. Until one day they meet some unfriendly vampires who will do anything for her blood, even if it means taking her away from Edward. I liked how this book really captured me and made it hard to put it down. I also really liked how Stephenie made two people really close but could never really be together. It’s the perfect love story and one of the best books I have ever read. I learned that people will do anything for love and will put themselves in near death situations just to save their loved ones. This book is very teen and adult friendly and is a great book for that person seeking a romantic story. Vampire Plagues: London 1850 is the story of young boy who goes on this adventure with his father and comes back with a horrifying story. His father was a famous explorer that got killed by a group of vampire bats. The leader of them is an old vampire who has came back from the Mayan times seeking as much blood as possible for him and his servants. The only bad thing is, is that he lives just down the street from head vampire. The boy teams up with his sister and his friend and tries to stop the vampire before he kills all of London. I liked how this book was an adventure book and had surprises on every page. I learned that when things go wrong you can’t always rely on your parents (especially if they are dead) and that you need to take matters into your own hands. This book is probably more of a kid/teen book rather then and adult book but is a great vampire adventure.

  11. I read two great books over the summer. First, I read “Stormbreaker” by Anthony Horowitz. The second book I read was “The House on Mango Street” by Sandra Cisneros. They were both really good books but in my opinion, Stormbreaker won by far. At first when I started reading I thought to myself that this books just going to be another one of those books you just have to read but don’t like it, but boy was I surprised. First, the book had nonstop action from the beginning to the end. Second, there is a boy in it named Alex and he is 15 and that is how old I am so in a way I could relate to the book. Last, the book wasn’t confusing at all and I would know what was happening the whole way through it so I wouldn’t get bored. I learned to trust your peers and to explore new things. I think that when you get knocked down you have to get right back up. I would strongly recommend this book to anybody.
The second book I read was “The House on Mango Street” this book was good but at some points I was confused as to where it was taking place and who was talking. I learned that some of us aren’t so fortunate so live life to the fullest and don’t be spoiled because we kids these days have a lot more then others around the world. I think that we should live life to the fullest because in the book people have not so much but they make it work because they can’t do anything about it. Those are the two books I read over the summer.

  12. Over the summer I read two books. The Secret Life of Bees by Sue Monk Kidd. Why i Let my Hair Grow Out by MaryRose Wood .The Secret Life Of Bees was one of the best books I have read in a while .It was about a girl Lily who runs away from home and her abusive father to find out what happened to her mom. She finds her mom's things and finds a clue to her mom's past so she and her nanny Rossleinda head South to a little town in South Carolina to a house that belongs to 4 sisters named April, May, June and August. August is a bee keeper so when Lily and her nanny come over to there house they get jobs. Lily does not want to tell them she ran away from home or that she thinks her mom lived in the same house. The two of them live there for a while just going on living life and they meet all types of people who fight for their rights as african american women and Lily see a whole different side of life. After getting close to the ladies, sharing loses of loved ones and gains in knowledge, her dad finds her and is very angry. Thats when she finds out what happened to her mom . I love this book because the women were very strong and eccentric and a good message about rights.
Why i let my hair grow out is about a teenager who broke up with her boyfriend and was very depressed so she shaved her hair off so her mom and dad sent her on a tour of ireland to help her. But she begins to get weird dreams from a accident she had . This book was good but a little to sci-fie for me.

  13. Over the summer, I read only one book but it was a good one. It was called A million little pieces, by James Frey. It was based on a true story. It starts when his self James, at the age of 23, being an alcoholic for 10 years and a crack addict for 3. Wakes up on a plane, with no recalation of the past three weeks, beaten up, missing his two front teeth, a hole in his cheak, and covered in vomit, blood, and pee. It continues as he goes through rehab with his ups and downs. Meeting new people and going through several surgeries like root canals without any anastetics, in fear of that he might have a negative reaction to the drugs. In the end he recovers but never relapses. A very intriquing novel and fun to read.

  15. Over the summer I read two totally different books but I loved both of them. The first book that I read was “Hollywood Royalty” By Zoey Dean. I loved this book because it was so not going to anybody in their life time, but everyone would want this to happen to them. A girl who was adopted named Kate and never knew who her parents were found out that they were celebrities. The parents arranged to meet there new daughter and were very happy to, but there other daughter named Cammie was not looking forward to meeting her new sister and spending time with her. Cammie made Kate’s life miserable when it was just too much for Kate she decided to go home and live with her family that actually wanted her. When she was just about to leave Cammie really did notice that they did have some fun together. She didn’t want to lose a sister so she begged Kate to stay. I’m not going to tell you the ending but I’m pretty sure you could guess what happened. The second book I read this summer was probably the best book I’ve every read. This book was called “Cracked Up to Be” By Courtney Summers. This book was about how a teenager’s life can be so perfect and one little thing can totally change your life. Parker was captain on the cheerleading squat had a 4.0 GPA, but one night changed every thing the night her friend went missing. You don’t find out what this thing was until the end of the book but when you do find out it will shock you. Parker didn’t try any more; she didn’t care any more, nobody knew what was wrong with her. Her parents didn’t know what to do any more so they just stopped trying. This book is also funny at some parts, this was one of my favorite books. These are the two books I read over summer vacation.

  16. Over the summer i read the books "White Flag Down" By Joel N. Ross and "The Tempest Tales" By Walter Mosley. White Flag Down is a story about U.S. Fighter Pilot Lieutenant Grant who is shot down over Switzerland while flying a recon mission. During the mission Grant and his Co-Pilot Sergeant "Racket" McNeil are able to get photos of a german prototype aircraft. After they are shot down Racket becomes injured and is rushed to a hospital. Grant has to bury the camera in the snow and go find Racket and get help for himself. He later gets quarantined to a hospital but gets setup to leave the hospital and gets blamed for attacking the clerk. He is then sent to prison but soon escapes and tries to get help to find Racket and retrieve the camera. Also another character Major Eduard Akimov is takin from the front lines of Stalingrad to try to find his ex-wife because she says that she has some documents that could end the war. I really liked White Flag Down because it was a thriller and suspence at the same time. I didn't learn much from this book but it did make me realize some of the horror that was envolved in World War 2. Also it made me think about how much i respect the soldiers who faught for us during the war and the soldiers who are in Iraq right now.
The Tempest Tales is the story of 34 year old Tempest Landry who is accidently shot and killed by the police. He then finds himself in line before St. Peter who later commands Tempest to hell. Tempest refuses this judgment and is sent back to earth with Joshua Angel who was part of the heavenly choir. They both have to remain on earth until Joshua can get Tempest to accept St. Peter's judgment. While on earth Tempest makes it harder and harder for Joshua everyday by tricking him and making him feel emotions. (There are no emotions in heaven.) Joshua ends up finding a girl friend, getting married, and having a child while also getting a job and trying to get Tempest to accept his Judgement. Tempest though ends up becoming best friends with a the Devil who is in disguise as a normal human being. The Devil tries to get Tempest to completly refuse the judgment which could break Heavens defences and have Satan invade. Joshua Angel must not only have Tempest accept the Judgment now but also stop Satan. I really liked this book because i am Chritstian so this book just really got me thinking. I learned a lot from The Tempest Tales, mostly just a lot about religion and heaven but it really made me think about Heaven and Hell and just my Christianity in general. Everything i thought about though was a turn for the better.
Both of these books were probably the best books i have ever read and I was glad that I chose to read them over summer break.

  17. I didn’t read two books over the summer but I have read “The Making of the Atomic Bomb” by Richard Rhodes and “Eragon” by Christopher Paolini. “The Making of the Atomic Bomb” was a complicated book but still well written it talks about the discoveries which lead to the technology to make the atomic bomb and then the actual making of it. In my mind the author does a great job of relaying the emotions these men and women had when exploring these unknown sciences. The second Book “Eragon” was not my favorite because it relayed too much fantasy for my taste and no actual technology or logic.

  18. Over the summer I read two books "Deception Point" and "Angels and Demons" which are both by Dan Brown. The reason I picked these books is they are both by Dan Brown and he is my favorite author. I picked "Angels and Demons" because right before the summer I finished reading "The Davinci Code" and loved it. Since "Angles and Demons" is the prequel to "The Davinci Code," I thought I would give it a try. "Angels and Demons" is a book about a man(Robert Landon) who is a very smart professor at Harvard. He specializes in ancient markings and symbols. He gets a call to come and look at a dead body. The body has a strange marking that people thought could never be recreated, it was an illuminati marking. The illuminati were a group of scientists, but you had to be very smart to join them and you had to follow "The Path of Illumanati" and they were thought to be extinct. But then a Illumanatist kills the pope. Then he captures the 4 cardinals who were the most likley to be come the next pope and said he would kill one every hour at each step of the Illumanati path. So Robert Landon has to follow the path of the Illumanati and save the cardinals before it is too late. He does follow the path but he can't manage to save any of the cardinals. Then he has to save the girl that was helping him and she is being kept at the Illumanati Church. He saves her but then he has to find the bomb that was placed under The Vatican City. They find it and they try to fly it as high as they can in a helicopter. It explodes but he survives and finds out that the pope's son was the man that was in charge until they got a new pope. The pope's son killed his dad and he killed the cardinals.Robert Landon finds out and the pope's son gets banished. This is one of the best books that I ever read.

"Deception Point" is a book about a presidental campaign conspiracy that involves the head of NASA who fakes the first finding of extraterrestial life. Rachel Sexton, the daughter of the man who is running against the president but she worked for the president. She tried to exploit this after she found out. But when she found out she started getting hunted by a team of three who had all of the resourses and alot of skill. When the president's opponent finds out from a fax from Rachel Sexton that it was a lie, he trys to blindside the president in a very unprofessional manner. So Rachel switches the documents about NASA with pictures of the opponent in a sex scandal so he ends up losing and the president is re-elected. I really liked this book because it had alot of twists and turns. I didn't want to put it down so I read it very fast.

  19. Over the summer, I read Twilight by Stephenie Meyer and Identical by Ellen Hopkins. First I read Twilight. I thought it was a great story and it kept me hooked the whole way through. Twilight is about a mortal girl named Bella Swan who falls in love with a vampire named Edward Cullen. This novel takes you through the ups and downs of Bella's love life. It is a very interesting story. When I was reading Twilight, it made me feel like vampires could be real by the way Steohenie Meyer describes these characters. I liked how this book kind of takes you away from reality while you are reading it. This book taught me how important love is and what people are willing to do for it.
The second book that I read was Identical by Ellen Hopkins. This book is mainly about two sisters, Kaeleigh and Raeanne, who are twins and they are very different from each other. Kaeleigh is the typical goodie goodie teenager. She gets good grades and her parents love her and would do anything for her. Raeanne on the other hand, feels misplaced from her fathers affection and so she looks straight to drugs, alcohol, and sexual behavior. Kaeleigh starts to find out what Raeanne is getting herself into. She tries to stop it before its too late. I liked how this book was based on a true story. It really shows the kinds of things that teenagers are getting themselves into. I learned that you need to watch your actions really close. Especially the people you are surrounded by. Both of the novels that I rad this summer were very different from each other. I liked both of them equally.

  20. Over the summer I have read two books one being, Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix by: J.K. Rowling. This is the 5th book of the amazing fantasy series that many people read, Harry Potter. In this book, Harry and his retched cousin Dudley were at the park when it started raining and they swiftly ran under a bridge when two detonators staged a attack on Harry and his cousin, after Harry used his magic to defend himself in the fight he is teleported to “number 12” the official base of Order of The Phoenix, a secret club lead by Hogwarts Head master Dumbledore .This secret group is to defend themselves/fight off, evil Lord Voldermort and his followers. Since the wizards aren’t allowed to use magic outside in regular world and in front of mugals he is reported to the ministry of magic. After some very lucky help of Dumbledore Harry is cleared and allowed to go to Hogwarts. Later during his stay at Hogwarts Harry is having nightmares of standing and going to a Department of Mysteries but he never see’s what’s inside. Harry soon gets helpful hint that it’s a trap and Lord Voldermort wants him to go inside. Soon harry assembles a group of students to defend themselves against an attack of Lord Voldermort. Later harry goes to Hogwarts to find his friends have been caught, he assembles as many members in his group and they leave to Department of Mystery, Harry finds a sphere. It says his name and Lord Voldermort name on it which means one of them must live and one must die. After a few of Voldermort followers show up and an intense battle goes on Harry defends himself against Lord Voldermort and Dumbledore shows up and, Lord and his followers flee…I learned more to the whole story and fight ongoing fight between Harry and Voldermort , I Now see the both can’t live and one must die as the prophecy states. This greatly matters to the whole series as now we know, there will be a huge battle and sacrifices will be made to defeat one another. The second book I read was, Holes by: Louis Sachar. In this book Stanley Yetlnitz is a young boy and is afflicted by a curse given by his great grandfather, after he is accused of a felony is sent to Camp Green Lake which is where young boys r given the task to dig holes everyday in the hot desert because, it apparently “builds character.”After making a few friends in this “camp” he especially makes a new friends named Zero, after this two young men attempt to escape in the desert they figure out this will be harder then they find out. Later they finally find a treasure that was stolen by young “kissen Kate” she and her followers stole it from Stanley’s great grandfather. After Stanley and Zero split the money Zero hires a private investigator to find his mom and finally is reintroduced to her. I learned to keep fighting for trying for whatever situation you’re in as Stanley and Zero did every day showing there mental and physical strength.

  21. Over the summer, the two novels I chose to read were The Notebook by Nicholas Sparks and My Sister’s Keeper by Jodi Picoult. The Notebook is a romance novel about a young couple who falls in love over the summer in North Carolina. The story’s narrator Noah, portrays the character of a devoted husband to Allie, his life’s love who over age, had developed Alzheimer’s and therefore, forgets the story of their love each night as she falls asleep and by the next morning, has no recollection of who he is. Faithful that one day she will come back to him, Noah devotedly reads to Allie from the notebook, a gift Allie gave Noah after she was diagnosed to remind her of their life together after she could no longer remember. The story progresses until Allie, against all odds, finally remembers Noah and their everlasting love.

I liked this novel because it continually portrayed the theme of everlasting love and devotion. This is definitely an emotional book, telling of new love, the devastation of lost love, and in the end, a love regained. I also enjoyed how Sparks managed to seamlessly weave the two time periods, that of the old couple and the story which they were reading of their previous adventures, to keep the reader entertained. This book taught me to have hope in everyday miracles, as Noah did in Allie. I think it’s important to always have hopes and dreams to live for because it is what makes life exciting. Also, it is a sweet reminder that love exists.

The book My Sister’s Keeper, on the other hand, held a very different message. This story follows the lives of the Fitzgerald family, whose oldest daughter Kate, was diagnosed with leukemia as a child. Their youngest child, Anna, was born to be a donor for her sister, giving up her own stem cells and bone marrow to sustain her sister’s life. The story takes place when Anna has grown to be thirteen, and when asked to donate a kidney for her sister, she refuses and proceeds to sue her parents for medical emancipation (rights to her own body). The family dynamic displayed throughout the novel shows how the cancer has not only effected Kate and Anna, but rather the entire family, including their mother, father, and oldest son Jesse, basically forgotten about and acts out by becoming an arsonist along with doing drugs and drinking underage. This story was very interesting to me because it addressed so many controversial issues. It showed an inside account on the impact of a serious disease like leukemia which was interesting but at the same time absolutely devastating. This book really caught my attention because I could make certain connections to my mom’s own cancer experiences. Leaning about all the scientific terms for the procedures and treatments helped me to truly understand how dramatic and life altering a disease of that stature really is. Both of these books were very entertaining and showed me a different perspective on life.

  22. Over the summer I read a lot of books. First, I read books one through four in the Caarter House Girls series. The author of these books is Melody Carlson. I also read books one through four in the Harry Potter series, witten by J.K. Rowling. Plus I read books two and three in the Gallagher Girl series. The author is Ally Carter. I read some independent books to. The first is "The Unknown Terrorist" by Richard Flanagan. The second is "Acceleration" by Graham McNamee.

I liked the books because when I was reading them, I felt like i was living the characters lives. All the books had so much detail, and were believable. It is really important for me to be able to realte to a book because if not I feel like it is to far fetched. I also like series a lot better then independent books because the finnish the story more fully.

  23. The book that I started to read over the summer was “The American Experience in Vietnam” which so far is good but is like a textbook so it’s hard to read sometimes. The reason that I picked this book was I am a person that likes learning about the history of wars and stuff like that. I know so much about WW2 so I picked a new topic to do. This book is good so far but it’s long and filled with so much facts that’s what makes it long

  24. The books I red over summer were all about dead people one was called the five people you meat in heaven, the other one was called the grave yard book. The grave yard book was extremely boring at the beginning but it was very interesting towards the end. I preferred the five people you meat in heaven for its great visualization, and thought this book produced. there were some very graphic scene like when he has to wash the scabs and burn marks off a small girl who he burnt in a war on accident. The best part was when the little girl forgave him and told him that he had saved the girl at the theme park.
